Tuning into Teens to support health and wellbeing

With support from FFV and Lodge Bharat, Wavecare has strengthened family connections in the City of Monash through its Tuning into Teens program. The initiative is evidence-based, designed to help parents better understand and support their teenagers’ emotional wellbeing.

Youth mental health disorders among young Australians have surged by nearly 50% in the past 15 years, with anxiety now the most common condition. Since COVID-19, Wavecare has seen a rise in school refusal, isolation and disconnection among teens - issues that can lead to long-term challenges for families and communities.

Emotional intelligence is the key to helping teens be more aware, assertive and strong in situations of peer pressure, setting them up for success in their adult life.

Tuning into Teens equips parents with practical skills to respond to their child’s emotional experiences with empathy and confidence. Delivered by trained psychologists over six weeks, the program focuses on emotion coaching, improving communication and fostering emotional intelligence. Research shows that teens who feel connected at home are more likely to engage positively with peers, school, and community.

"Our Tuning into Teens program continues to be a highly valued resource for parents and caregivers seeking stronger relationships with their teenagers. The community response has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the need for continued support and expansion."

In 2024–25, FFV contributed $36,000, alongside Wavecare’s own $6,000, to deliver six courses - three in English and three in Mandarin – improving accessibility for families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Over 40 families participated, reporting stronger relationships, reduced conflict, and improved emotional resilience. Parents also built peer support networks, reducing isolation and creating a ripple effect of wellbeing across the community.

With FFV’s support, Wavecare is helping families navigate adolescence with greater confidence - building healthier relationships and stronger communities.
