Grant: $6,000 ($1,000 Lodge / $5,000 FFV)
Location: Country Victoria
Integra Service Dogs Australia works with Veterans, First Responders and their families living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), enriching lives through highly trained Labrador assistance dogs. These dogs, initially purchased partially trained from the Guide Dogs Association for around $6,000, then undergo a further 12 months of specialist training at a cost of approximately $40,000.
The program empowers Veterans and First Responders with the tools to rebuild their lives and reclaim their place in the community. Each partnership is built on a powerful bond of trust and mutual service, with the dogs providing vital support, such as detecting anxiety and offering comfort before symptoms escalate.
Members of Victoria Naval and Military Lodge witnessed firsthand the life-changing impact of an Integra Service Dog with a member of the Army Lodge, whose dog allows him to participate in lodge life and broader society. Inspired by this, they agreed to support Integra’s program, aligning with their proud tradition of service.
Thanks to the Lodge’s contribution and funding from Freemasons Foundation Victoria, a service dog named Sage has now been placed with Nick, a Navy veteran living in country Victoria. Richard Lord, National Partnerships Manager at LifeUnleashed for Integra Service Dogs Australia, said Sage has quickly settled into her new role, already working her own kind of magic.
“Nick once served in the Navy, often on lookout from the upper deck scanning the horizon. His Service Dog Sage is now doing much the same for him - keeping Nick in sight, under chin and on her horizon.”
Nick is celebrating immediate gains — regular walks to improve fitness, and with Sage by his side or resting at his feet, a renewed confidence to spend more time in public places.
This grant ensures that Nick, like many others supported by Integra, can move forward with the loyal companionship and reassurance of his service dog, opening the door to greater independence and connection with his community.
